Mad Hatter Review Knock Our Hats Off Contest

Note: I'm a wee bit partial to Mad Hatter in that they recently sent me one of the nicest rejection e-mails. They took the time to let me know that my piece almost made it. It was so nice, in fact, that I thanked the editor, who in turn thanked me, and explained why it didn't quite get there. Unfortunately, no two pieces of mine are ever the same, and I have no other "edgy" material to submit to this competition, but I am proof positive that when they say they give new and emerging writers a chance, they really mean it. I do strongly suggest reading a couple of issues. This isn't standard stuff.

THE FIRST MHR KNOCK OUR HATS OFF CONTEST

 

Mad Hatters’ Review will consider submissions in FICTION or POETRY commencing on MARCH 1^ST, 2010 (12 a.m. USA EST) and ending on June 30^th (11:59 p.m.). 

 

First prize winners in both genres will receive $250 (each) plus publication of their entries in Issue 12.  The winning works of 5 runners-up in each genre will also be published in Issue 12. 

 

All winning entries will be published in a print anthology called “Knock Our Hats Off: A Little Book of Curious Delights.”  Each winner will receive a copy of this deluxe collector’s item.

 

The terms “fiction” and “poetry” may be interpreted broadly.  Take a walk on the wild side through our pages. Take liberties. Governments are taking them away from us, so we’re giving them away free.

Poetry: 3 poems max per entry. 

Fiction: 3000 words max per entry.

By all means, enter as many times as you wish.

Submitted works should be copied and pasted into the exquisite corpus of your email AND attached as an RTF Doc.  If you’re submitting visual poetry or visual fiction, attach your entries as jpeg/s or gif/s.  If you absolutely MUST, submit these offerings in PDF format.

 

Pages of texts should be titled, but your name should only appear on the subject line of your email, as submissions will be read blind.  We’ll ask for your bio and optional pic if you’re a first place winner or runner-up.

 

Simultaneous submissions are expected.  Just tell us immediately if some other lucky editor has grabbed your gem/s. But please realize that we won’t refund entry fees.

SLS Competition: Still Time and Highly Recommended

Hey readers, the SLS (Summer Literary Seminars) Unified Literary Contest––that's a mouthful––closes to submissions February 28, so there's still time to enter. There is a $15 dollar fee for each submission of fiction or poetry. The prizes are:

• First Place–All expenses paid (airfare, tuition, and housing) to one of their three seminars in Montreal, Canada; Vilnius, Lithuania; or Nairobi-Lamu, Kenya as well as publication in Fence.
• Second Place-Full tuition waiver only
• Third Place-50% off tuition

In addition several other finalists receive amounts off their tuition. Last year, as one of the 30 qualifying finalists, I was eligible for a 25% tuition waiver. Being the eternal skeptic, my first thought was they decided to offer the discount to all entrants after they couldn't get enough people to attend. So before I enjoyed a woo-hoo moment I decided to post some inquiries in forums. I learned that wasn't the case and the discount was a standard part of the competition for which not everyone qualified. (I really have to get a handle on that Sicilian outlook on life), but be that as it may, even with the discount I couldn't justify the airfare to last year's locations.  Still, it proves this is not one of those "insider" competitions where they say everyone has a chance, but they don't. Plus, a trip to Montreal might be more in line with what my readers can afford. So, why not go for it?

Different Kind of Contest

Here's a cool concept for a competition from our friends at Glimmer Train. Their Best Start contest "is meant to encourage new writers to tackle that story!" Glimmer runs several contests a year but tends to stick with the tried and true. In this contest, they actually encourage submissions of your experimentation. I have several unusual beginnings in my Word files that haven't grown in months, so I figure, what have I got to lose. Well, it does cost $10 per submission and the prize is only $50, however 50 Best Starts will be chosen making your chances much better than the usual GT contests.

This is limited to new writers whose work has not appeared in a print publication with a circulation of more than 3000.

The current contest closes June 30.

And the Winner Is (Are)....

Angie Ledbetter of Gumbo Writer has announced the winners of the first-ever Gumbo Writers Contest. The entries were so good (and I can attest to that), there was a tie for first place. The winners will receive a free edit/critique from CROSSxCHECKING  and a little prize of my own thrown in––10% off their next edit or critique and 15% if they refer a friend.

It was so much fun, I'm thinking of running my own contest when things calm down around here in the fall. So stay tuned.

Gumbo Contest

Nothing like running a little behind, but you all know it's been a stressful six weeks.  The happy part is that my good friend Angie Ledbetter of Gumbo Writer invited me to be her––once secret, now revealed––"super secret superlative editor"––Angie's words, not mine––to edit the winning entry for her writing contest. I see now that the contest is full!

Gosh, I guess everyone rushed in their entries once that secret was revealed. (Actually I think most of the entries came in before that.)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it.
